Oak Wilt

To avoid Oak Wilt don't trim your oaks now.  Between early April and July 1 beetles that transport the spores of the Oak Wilt fungus are active.  Fresh pruning cuts create avenues for infection and are visited by these beetles.  For more information, click on OAK WILT.

Iowa One Call

Don't forget to call Iowa One Call before planting your tree(s) this spring and summer.  Utilities will be located on your property within 48 hours of calling.  Call 1-800-292-8989.  It is the law.

Don't Plant Ash

The City of Waterloo Leisure Services Board unaminously passed a change in the City Tree and Shrub Guidelines recently.  Due to the threat of the Emerald Ash Borer, no variety of ash trees will be allowed to be planted on Waterloo's street rights-of-ways.  This is the area between the sidewalks and streets or areas along the streets where there is no sidewalk.  In fact, a permit is required from the City Forester to plant any tree in this area.  The emerald ash borer has killed approximately 20 million trees in the Detroit, Michigan area since 2002.  It is a big threat to our ash tree resources in Waterloo, Black Hawk County, and Iowa.
