LAFAYETTE PARK RENOVATION PROJECT

A Waterloo Rath Brownfield Redevelopment Project

The City of Waterloo Leisure Services Commission is pleased to announce the upcoming re-opening of the completely renovated Lafayette Park.

Lafayette Park is a 7-acre park located near the former Rath Packing Plant, between the following streets: Lafayette, Sycamore, Dunham Place, and Vinton. The park was established in 1909 and has been in need of much improvement.  Play equipment was outdated and unsafe, and had recently been removed from the park.  Existing tennis/basketball courts were in need of major repairs, and there were no other amenities in the park.

Multiple neighborhood association meetings (Neighbors for Life) and public planning/input sessions have been held over the last five years to develop an improvement plan in anticipation of Federal BEDI (Brownfields Economic Development Initiative) grant funding for a park renovation project.

The following improvements are currently under way at Lafayette Park:

  • Installation of 2 new children’s playscapes with safety surfacing
  • Construction of a lighted concrete walking trail around the entire park perimeter
  • Installation of new picnic pavilions, seating, and enclosure structure for portable restroom facilities
  • Asphalt overlay / renovation of existing basketball and tennis courts
  • Related electrical improvements for new lights and pavilion power outlets
  • Installation of backstop and turf improvements for a multi-purpose athletic field

AHTS Architects of Waterloo have developed the plan.  Michael Huff Construction has been awarded a contract to implement most of the improvements.  Scott’s Electric of Waterloo has been awarded a contract for related electrical improvements.

Preliminary Park Renovation Budget:

AHTS Architects                                   $  42,500.00

Huff Construction Contract                   $471,910.00

Scott’s Electric                                      $  75,599.47

Contracted Total                                    $590,009.47

Funding sources for this project include $500,000.00 in federal BEDI funds, a major gift from the Junior League of Waterloo-Cedar Falls, and City of Waterloo general obligation bonds. Funding will be requested from the Mid-American Trees Please! program for future tree plantings in the park.
