JR. HIGH COED VOLLEYBALL LEAGUE6th-8th Grades
We’ve heard from our customers of a need for a Jr. High Volleyball league, so here it is. Seven weeks of game play on Wednesday evenings at Central Middle School. Games will begin February 6, 2008 and end March 26, 2008. Participants need to form their own teams (a minimum of six players is required) and provide their own coach/manager. Games will be six-on-six, with rally scoring. Teams can be formed with any combination of 6th-8th graders.

IPRA YOUTH BASKETBALL "SPOT SHOT" CONTESTAges: 8-13
Leisure Services and the IPRA are sponsoring the annual IPRA youth basketball “Spot Shot” contest in early March. The IPRA “Spot Shot” contest has six age categories: ages 8-13, for both boys and girls. Boys and girls have 60 seconds to dribble from half court and shoot from 7 locations. Two rounds are shot from 7 preset locations. The points are then added together from both rounds to make up the total score. The top two participants in each age category advance to the state competition. |

WIFFLE BALL LEAGUE5th-8th Grades
This exciting, fast-paced version of baseball is sure to be a hit for all those baseball/softball players preparing for the upcoming season. The season will begin the last week of March and finish up at the end of April. Games will be played on Tuesday and/or Thursdays evenings throughout the six week season. Participants must form their own team, (minimum of 3 players and maximum of five players per team). Leagues will divide into 5th/6th grades and 7th/8th grades with a boys and girls division. Games are an hour in length or 6 innings. Game times will be determined upon completion of registration process.

3-ON-3 BASKETBALL TOURNAMENT5th-8th Grades
A day of fun on March 15, 2008 for youth to experience tournament pool play. The tournament will divide into 5th/6th grade and 7th/8th grade with boys and girls divisions. Awards for 1st and 2nd places in each pool. Team captains will be contacted with game times when registration is complete.

JR. OLYMPIC SKILLS COMPETITIONAges: 8-13
U.S. Junior Olympic Skills Competition presented by Kellogg's Frosted Flakes (Jr. Olympic Skills) provides youngsters across the country an opportunity to participate in an exciting multi-sport skills competition. This national initiative gives boys and girls, ages 8 to 13, the chance to showcase their athletic talents in four sports: basketball, soccer, tennis and track & field. Jr. Olympic Skills is intended to encourage youth participation in sport and emphasize the "FUN" element of competition. Since there is no registration fee, everyone has the opportunity to participate. Boys and girls compete SEPARATELY and can advance through 3 levels of competition, including the National Finals at the United States Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colorado. |

SPRING BREAK SPORTS CAMPSKingergarten-5th Grades
This program is designed to keep participants active during spring break through an assortment of sports activities. Leisure Services Staff members will lead participants through structured games each day. Participants will meet at designated times Monday-Wednesday. Thursday’s meeting will be K-2 (9:00-12:00) and 3-5 (9:00-1:00) for a pizza party. The 3rd-5th graders will be able to swim from 11:00-12:00 each day. Certified lifeguards will be on staff to supervise the pool area. Parents are welcome to stay and watch or they can drop children off for the program.

Summer Basketball League -- Sponsored by: Mayor’s YES+ Initiative4th-8th Grade Boys & Girls
This league is sponsored by the Mayor’s YES+ Initiative. This program will include basic fundamental instruction through team practices and league play with a heavy emphasis placed on sportsmanship. This league will conclude with a tournament and a league championship game. Referees and score-keepers will be used for games. Awards for 1st and 2nd place teams in both boys and girls divisions. Program runs June 9, 2008 - July 31, 2008 with Boys meeting on Mondays/Wednesdays and Girls meeting on Tuesdays/Thursdays. Games and practices will be held between 5:30pm and 8:30pm at either Lincoln and/or Cunningham schools depending on enrollment numbers. Participants will receive a league schedule at the first team practice.

OUTDOOR ADVENTURERSAges: 7-12
The Leisure Services Department is excited to offer this program in cooperation with the Iowa DNR and George Wyth State Park. The adventurers will experience many different outdoor activities in this 4-day program. Activities will consist of nature hikes, leaf pressing, catching aquatic animals, nature crafts, fish identification, animal tracking, making shelters and many other fun and informative activities. The program will be led by a George Wyth State Park Naturalist with the assistance of Leisure Services Staff. Participants will meet at George Wyth at 9:00am for a two-hour adventure session Monday-Wednesday. On Thursday participants will meet for a four-hour session which will be spent fishing (lunch will be provided).
